For punters, one of the most frustrating things in sport is when you place a bet on a horse and it just misses out on winning.
Sure, there are definitely some occasions when your choice comes second and were never in the race, but there are also those times when they’re just pipped to the win by another participant in the event and you have to accept losing your wager, presuming you didn’t place an each-way bet.
Coral are looking to win over those bettors who have experienced this thanks to their Pipped at the Post promotion on races shown on selected races, which pays them out as winners in certain circumstances.
Coral’s Offer Explained
We have all been there: we’ve done all of our research, looked into the horses that are taking place in a given event and decided on the one that we want to bet on, only to find out that we’ve lost our bet because the horse that we chose was beaten by the finest of margins. Coral have created the Pipped at the Post promotion to take the sting out of just such a situation, paying out on such wagers as if they are a winner on bets of as little as £1 and up to a stake of £10. That is the case regardless of whether you’ve placed a win or an each-way single bet on the horse in question.
In terms of the distances that are being spoken about, here are the winning distances and whether or not Coral will pay out if your horse is beaten by this amount:
| Winning Distance | Qualifying Races |
|---|---|
| Nose (0.05 Lengths) | Flat & Jumps |
| Short Head (0.1 Lengths) | Flat & Jumps |
| Head (0.2 Lengths) | Flat & Jumps |
| Neck (0.3 Lengths) | Jumps Only |
| ½ Length+ (0.5+ Lengths) | None |
When it comes to what you’re allowed to bet on, you can place a win or an each-way bet on selected races in order to take advantage of the offer. It is important to note that the ante post markets won’t apply to this promotion, but the best odds guarantee will be active. Similarly, in-race bets won’t see the offer applied to them.
Things to Bear in Mind
The official winning distance is what Coral will be looking at when it comes to deciding whether or not to pay out on your wager. That is determined according to the ruling of the course steward’s initial decision and will be published by the Racing Post. Obviously, you don’t need to worry about any of that and the payout will be given to you automatically, but it is a good way of double-checking what the actual distance was if the race was a close finish but you don’t end up getting paid anything and find yourself wondering why not.
The offer is available on selected races and is only applicable to win and each-way bets. That means that any specialist offerings like win only, place only, unnamed favourite/2nd favourite, betting without markets and any enhanced prices won’t qualify. Should the result be reversed for whatever reason, you will not end up receiving your payout. Another thing you might want to bear in mind is that you will only get a payout if your horse officially finishes second. A horse coming in third won’t get a payout, even if it finishes within the specified required distance.
There are other things that you should also think about when it comes to the bet. If it is a dead heat, then your bet will be settled according to the normal rules, therefore not counting towards the promotion. It is also an offer that is only available online, which means that Coral customers need to have an account on the company’s website in order to be able to qualify for it on the relevant races. Also be aware that the offer may apply to both flat and jumps races on a given day, meaning that the maximum qualifying distances will change between a neck (jumps) and a head (flat or all-weather) depending on the race.
When it comes to placing more than one bet, only the first one that you place will qualify for the offer. That is also the case if you place a wager on more than one horse in a race. The offer is only for real money bets and it is only your first one that will count. In other words, further bets on the same event will not qualify, which you might want to think about before placing your wagers.
Is it Worth It?
One of the things that you might find yourself wondering is whether or not this is a promotion that is worth taking advantage of. On the one hand, the maximum stake amount that you can place and still qualify for the offer is £10, so punters who would regularly spend above that amount might not pay it much mind. On the other hand, you are essentially being covered for any races that end up being close finishes, even if it is only up to a figure of £10.
Of course, just because there is such an offer in place doesn’t mean that you should automatically look to take advantage of it. If you aren’t someone who normally places bets on horse races, for example, then you should not start doing so simply because of this promotion. If you wouldn’t normally be placing a wager on an event then don’t do so now either. Horses can get beaten by a neck or less reasonably often, but if you weren’t going to bet on the race then don’t.
